The main issue being addressed in the article is the complexity with health care information technology. This complexity can compromise the quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare delivery and patient data, care processes and medical knowledge are fundamental sources of this complexity.

What was the solution for which technology had an answer?

Health care providers can use electronic health records (EHRs) to manage the complexity of a patient’s care more efficiently over multiple venues, times and conditions. This can occur by allowing clinicians to retrieved and exchange their patient’s data easily. This helps the clinicians to make optimal clinical decision, providing workflow technologies to monitor and assess care decisions and processes and capturing data that can be analyzed to assess care patterns.

What implications might this have in healthcare delivery?

The implications in healthcare are that clinicians will be able to more effectively manage their patients and organizations will reduce their health care expenses. With the ability to easily capture accurate data, clinician’s will be able to quickly analyze information that will be pertinent to improving the quality of care they provide.

What did you learn from it that might have application for your practice?

All the articles I have read for these journal entries have reinforced to me that the use of technology in healthcare can be instrumental in improving patient care, reducing organization costs and making the lives of the clinicians much easier.
